The First Home Run Derby

Tonight, you can watch the Home Run Derby, a part of the All Star events since 1985. There will be high-tech distance trackers for every home run and plenty of chatter as the players smack dozens of baseballs out of Petco Park in San Diego. In 1960, a much simpler production aired for the first time and, unlike the modern derby, featured the biggest stars in the game. Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, and Mickey Mantle were among the participants in the original Home Run Derby, filmed in an empty stadium during the offseason. How did it come to be? What makes the show so memorable for baseball fans? Read all about it in my latest for Yahoo’s The Post Game.
